Building expressions with the Expression Builder

Use the Expression Builder to locate functions and complete parameters to functions in a natural language format when building expressions. The Expression Builder opens from all places except the check box control.

1. Build the expression by doing one of the following:
   • Type the expression: Enter all or part of the expression in the text editor by typing, including functions, operators, constants, and property references or linked property references.
   • Select properties and functions from a list by typing "." for a property and "@" for a function.
     • Include a function by clicking Functions, selecting the library that contains the function, and dragging the function to the text editor.

     You can also use common mathematical and logical operators; see Expressions—Operators and precedence.

     • Include a property by clicking Properties, selecting the page from which to reference the property, and dragging the property to the text editor.

     Properties can be referenced from four areas:

     • Current Page: Includes a list of properties from your current case context.
     • Data Pages: Includes a list of properties available from application data pages.
     • Parameter Pages: Includes properties defined as parameters on the invoking rule.
     • Custom Pages: Includes properties from custom pages defined on the Pages & Classes tab of the invoking rule.
   • Drag and drop functions and properties into the text editor.
2. Optional. Search for a property in your current page or for a non-internal function by entering all or part of the text for which you want to search in the search field and either click or press Enter. Search results appear in the pane, which you can drag into the text area.
3. Supply an argument value for functions that require arguments in the text editor.
4. Click Validate to check the syntax of the expression (this does not check whether properties you reference in the expression are defined.) or click Cancel to close the form and return to the previous form without changes.

5. Click Reset to discard any modifications made to an expression since the Expression Builder was last opened.

6. Click Submit.
